House Training Your Dog (Cont.)
|
Teach Me Where to Pee, Please
First you need to decide on a term to use when you want your dog to poop or piddle. Some suggestions
might be: business, piddle, duty or any name you feel comfortable with. Make sure everyone in your family
uses the same term.
Now it’s time to take your dog to the spot where you would like it to go to the bathroom. When the dog starts
to do its business you should repeat the word you have decided on, repeatedly, while the dog is going.
Your dog will associate the behavior of relieving itself with the term you have chosen. Once your dog is
finished you should reward it with “good dog” and a treat. If the dog doesn’t go after 20 minutes or so you
will need to bring the dog back in the house and confine it to a small area or kennel. A dog will avoid going
to the bathroom near its food and water or in its kennel. After 20 minutes or so it’s time to take your dog out
again and repeat what you did the first time. Say your chosen term repeatedly while the dog is doing its
business.
If your dog accidentally messes in the house do not yell or stick their nose in it, unless you want to prolong
your agony.
If you work, you will find you need to get up extra early in order to teach your best friend this new routine.
Repeat the training process several times each day. Within a week or so your dog will show understanding
of where and when you want them to do their business. It will take some time initially but as your dog
becomes better trained your relationship between owner and pet will grow tremendously. Soon you will be
teaching your pet new tricks and discovering the meaning of the phrase “mans best friend”.
